Stevent F. Gately was an award-winning artist, who developed an extensive body of work featuring a wide range of media and subject matter from abstracts to realism. He was a master of color, shapes and textures, experimenting with media, composition, contrasts, and substrates. His works are displayed in numerous galleries and private collections, including the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, Columbia Museum of Art, the Gibbes Museum in Charleston, and the Mobile Museum of Art in Alabama.
Few artists and educators can boast a career as influential as that of Steven F. Gately. A lifelong artist, Gately earned a BFA from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and an MFA from Florida State University. For 49 years he taught painting, sculpture, drawing, art history and design at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina.
Gately was born in West Palm Beach, Florida. The proximity to the ocean shaped the artist’s early life and remained an influence throughout his career. His works are contemplative, modern, subtle and complex, many reflecting his interest in geometry, ancient history, mythology, symbolism, mysticism and Egyptology.
His exhibition record is extensive beginning in the 1960s. He received numerous awards and recognitions in national, regional and state competitions. Gately’s artwork is included in public and private collections throughout the United States. Following his death in 2021, the Board of Trustees named FMU's gallery in his honor.
